About this breed
Intelligent, trainable, and possessing a noble bearing, the assertive and confident Cane Corso is an unmatched protector. The breed’s heritage stretches back to ancient Roman times, with its name roughly translating from Latin as ‘bodyguard dog’.
With males standing close to 66 cm at the shoulder and often weighing over 40 kilograms, with a large head, keen expression, and muscles rippling beneath a short, stiff coat, the Corso is immediately an imposing presence. Their formidable appearance acts as their primary defence against intruders. As one writer described, ‘An understated air of cool competence, the kind of demeanour you’d expect from a professional bodyguard, is the breed’s hallmark.’
Corsi are intelligent, loyal, eager to please, versatile, and deeply devoted to their humans, but they are also assertive and strong-willed, sometimes taking control of an unwitting owner. As with any large guardian dog, responsible breeding and early socialisation with people and other dogs are essential.
