Guidance you may find useful:

  1. Research the breed of dog first to make sure they will be suitable. Never purchase a dog based on looks alone. Some dogs for example have very high energy requirements and will need lots of space to thrive. If you are unsure what breed may suit you then check out our breed suitability quiz.
  2. Consider whether a puppy or adult dog may suit your requirements best and browse our adoption section.
  3. Ask the seller questions such as have the parents been health tested, is the dog or puppy up to date on their vaccinations and worming requirements, information about the temperament of the dog or puppy and any questions you may have on the breed in general.
  4. Reputable breeders will often vet potential buyers to make sure that their beloved puppies are going to a loving and suitable environment.
  5. If anything seems untoward, flag this ad through the Report an Ad function. You may also consider contacting a Garda station.

  7. If possible, you should always view puppies or the dog in their home environment to understand how they have been cared for. Do they seem well socialised and content? Is the mother happy and in good condition (keep in mind that the mother may not yet have fully recovered from the effects of pregnancy). A friendly and socialised mother is likely to have friendly, well socialised puppies.
  8. If purchasing a puppy they must be at least 8 weeks old before they leave the seller. Puppies learn important socialisation cues from their mother and litter mates and need a full 8 weeks in order to become fully weaned. Removing them before 8 weeks can lead to negative behaviour traits down the line such as fear, aggression, anxiety, resource guarding, reactivity and inappropriate play biting.
  9. It is a legal requirement for the puppy or dog to have a microchip. You will need to provide proof of ID and address to the seller in order to transfer the microchip. The microchip number should also match the number listed in this ad.
  10. The seller should provide you with a vaccination card.
  11. The seller may provide you with a small supply of the puppy’s current food. If you’re planning to feed them a different brand you should do so gradually.
  12. Have a comfortable, quiet place set up for the new addition at home, prior to their arrival.
