Life With the Four Sausages: A Q&A with Chloe & Her Four Dachshunds

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to live with not one, not two, but four dachshunds? Meet Chloe — a devoted dog mum with a house full of personality, wagging tails, and a lot of love.

In this Q&A, Chloe shares what day-to-day life looks like with her pack, gives us a glimpse into each dog’s unique character, and offers helpful advice for anyone considering this charming (and sometimes stubborn) breed.

The Dachshund, with its distinctive long body and short legs, is truly a breed apart. Originally bred in Germany for badger hunting, this small dog packs a big personality, filled with courage and cleverness. Known for their loyal and family-oriented nature, Dachshunds are spirited companions that bring both charm and devotion to any home. Let’s dive into what makes the Dachshund such a beloved and unique breed.

Life With Four Dachshunds

First off, Chloe — tell us everything! Who are your four little sausages and what are their personalities like?

Okay so I have 4 little sausages called Otis, Milo, Dobby and Masiey.

Otis is the OG and is 4 years old, Milo is 3 years old and Dobby and Maisey are brother and sister, they will be 1 year old this year!!

Be honest: did you mean to end up with four Dachshunds, or did they just…happen to you?

Oh, if you told me 4 years ago when I got Otis that I would have 4 dachshunds today I wouldn’t believe it! It typically always starts by getting a dog for your dog 😂 I used to bring Otis everywhere with me from work to going out for drinks, but I always felt he would have like a friend, and that’s how I ended up with Milo.

I was terrified introducing Otis to a little teeny tiny puppy, I knew he was good with other dogs, but I didn’t know how would feel sharing me, as dachshunds are super needy and protective to their person, luckily after some sussing out, he soon grew to love his new little brother ( see picture below for the sussing out 😂 ).

Maisey was a spur of the moment decision to be honest, I knew I could handle a 3rd and my love for the breed is immense, about a week later I came home form work with Masiey in my arms and opened the front door to be greeted with another sausage in a little basket… It was Dobby!! He was the last of the litter and my mum didn’t have the heart to leave him behind, so she surprised me… and oh, was I surprised! I remember thinking how the hell will I manage two puppies the same age… But after a few days everything fell into place and my stress levels settled 😂

For anyone who’s never lived with a Dachshund — what’s one thing they must know before bringing one home?

Dachshunds may be small, but they have huge personalities — stubborn, clever, and fiercely loyal. One thing you must know before bringing one home is that they need consistent training and patience. Toilet training can be difficult as they point blank refuse to go outside if there’s even a drop of rain 😂.

Their independent and stubborn nature can make them a challenge, sometimes they choose what they want to hear and not what you want them to do. But once they trust you, their devotion is unmatched!! Oh, and crate training is a must- I learned this the hard way!! I used to let Otis and Milo sleep in my bed but then when I got the pups, I realised it wasn’t an option anymore

What’s a typical day like with the crew? Is it chaos, cuddles, or a bit of both?

Every day is different, but for the most part they all know the routine at home. Dachshunds are quite laid back and as much as they love a venture outside, they love nothing more than hopping into their crate and snuggling up. I never get woken by them, I’m the one waking them up  😂 A cuddle daily is a must- or 4 in my case!!

Dachshunds have a reputation for being stubborn. Truth or myth? How do yours behave when they hear the word “no”?

Absolutely the truth!! Be ready to get spoken back to a lot, they are well able to tell you who’s the boss. Mine usually bark at me when I get stern or say no. Otis will even make these little whining noises.

Do your Dachshunds get along well with each other — or are there occasional sausage squabbles?

For the most part, they get along like a little sausage squad … snuggling, playing, and even teaming up for mischief. But yes, of course there are occasional sausage squabbles, especially over toys or prime lap space. Like siblings, they have their moments, but the bond always wins out in the end. Luckily for me they can all be fed together and there is never a fight for food or snarling- that’s always a plus!

Quirks, Chaos & Cuteness

What’s the weirdest or funniest quirk each dog has? We want the juicy details.

Each of my Dachshunds is a little weirdo in the best way. Otis insists on talking back in full-on sass mode if I tell him no, complete with dramatic side-eye. Maisey has a bizarre obsession with digging holes in the garden. Milo would honestly talk for Ireland, he would bark at his own shadow. Dobby AKA Harry Potter dog is the big hulk of the group, if he starts running at you for a cuddle you best be ready to get knocked over

Have any of your Dachshunds done something truly heroic or hilariously disastrous? Share a story that made you laugh…or cry…or both.

I used to have retainers after I got my braces off and one night when Otis was sleeping beside me, I must have taken them out (disgusting I know) but I woke to sharp digs in my side and little Otis had made ribbons of these plastic retainers… that are not cheap might I add!

What is something you’ve learned from owning Dachshunds that you didn’t expect?

I didn’t expect to learn just how much personality could fit into such a small body. Dachshunds have taught me that determination doesn’t always come in a big package…  they are fearless, stubborn, and endlessly clever. But more than that, they’ve shown me the depth of loyalty and love a dog can give. They’re not just pets, they are tiny, long-bodied soulmates with a lot to say.

Health, Walks & Everyday Adventures

People always talk about Dachshund’s backs — have you had to deal with any spine-related health stuff? Got any tips for keeping their little bodies safe and strong?

Yes, Dachshunds’ long backs require extra care to keep them healthy. I focus a lot on preventing jumping from high places, especially furniture, since those impacts can be hard on their spines. Using ramps or stairs is always a good thing to introduce from a young age. Regular gentle exercise keeps their muscles strong and supportive, and I try to watch their weight, keeping them lean reduces strain on their backs. Luckily, I haven’t had any issues with their backs, but it is important you educate yourself on Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) before committing to a dachshund.

What do walks look like when you’re wrangling four? Is there a secret Dachshund herding method you’ve mastered?

Haha no I have no secret herding method unfortunately, luckily where I live, they can be let out in the garden and run wild. I have tried to walk four and it usually ends in tears 😂 Milo doesn’t cope well with other dogs and can get quite worked up on walks so I avoid any situation that can cause him unnecessary stress. I bring them to a place called Woofland in Portlaoise it is a huge, enclosed field full of activities and each slot is private so you if you have a dog like Milo, it is great.

What is their favourite treat or snack — and are there any you avoid?

The usual suspects- Chicken, Sausages, Beef. I avoid anything too high in salt for dehydration.

Sausage Styles & Dachshund Facts

Dachshunds come in different sizes and coat types — which kinds do you have, and do their grooming needs differ?

All mine are smooth-haired and they require minimal grooming. I usually bath mine and keep their ears and paws in good nick. The long-haired needs more frequent brushing to prevent tangles and mats, plus occasional trimming, especially around the ears and paws. The wire-haired requires regular brushing and professional hand-stripping a few times a year to keep their coat looking its best. Each type is beautiful in their own way and come with their own little grooming routine!

Dachshunds seem to have exploded in popularity in Ireland over the last few years. What do you wish more people knew about dachshunds before getting one?

Dachshunds are lovable and full of character, it’s easy to see why they have become so popular! But beyond their adorable looks, they’re little dogs with big personalities who need patience, gentle training, and lots of love. Their long backs mean they need special care to stay healthy, and their stubborn streak can be a bit of a challenge, but that’s part of their charm. I really wish more people knew that a Dachshund is not just a pet — they become family, and they deserve a lifetime of attention and care

Dachshunds were originally bred to hunt — do you see any of those instincts in your dogs today?
(Do they chase squirrels? Dig holes? Let us in on their “job” mindset!)

Definitely! My Dachshunds show plenty of those hunting instincts. They love chasing birds in the garden, it’s like their inner hunter comes alive the moment they spot one. Digging holes? Oh yes, they’re natural diggers! Sometimes it feels like they’re on a secret mission to find hidden treasures underground. They’re incredibly focused when they catch a scent, and you can tell they really take their ‘job’ seriously. It’s part of what makes them so entertaining and uniquely Dachshund!

A lot of people are drawn to dachshunds for their looks — but what kind of home or lifestyle suits them best?

Dachshunds are undeniably cute, but they thrive best in homes where their personality and needs are truly understood. They do well in active households that can provide an outdoor space and mental stimulation, since they are clever and curious dogs.

Due to their long backs, it’s important they have a safe environment, no jumping off high furniture and owners who are attentive to their health. They also love being part of the family and can be a bit sensitive, so homes where they get lots of love, patience, and consistent training really suit them best. Whether it’s a bustling family or a calm, quiet home, what matters most is the commitment to giving them the care and attention they deserve

Lastly, if your four pups could talk for just one day, what do you think each would say?

Oh, if my four Dachshunds could talk for a day, I think it would be absolute chaos  and hilarious.

Otis- I’m clearly the boss around here. I demand snacks, snuggles, and zero interruptions during nap time.

Milo- Just let me out to bark at absolutely anything in sight.

Dobby- Can I have some more food?

Maisey- I’m going out to the garden to dig myself to China.

Each of them has such a distinct personality, I honestly feel like I already do know what they’re saying -just with a lot more side-eye and tail wags!
